Rosamund Pike says that she did end up enjoying herself at Oxford because, in her final year, she fell in love. ‘It was like that sentence in Brideshead, about a door finally opening and you suddenly see what it’s all about. Oxford became beautiful for me. I have wonderful memories of being there and it seemed to be endlessly summer and it was wonderful to be in love, really…’ Her boyfriend, Simon Woods, went on to become an actor, too, and after they split up was cast alongside her in the film Pride & Prejudice in 2005.

YOU FAIL TO MENTION THEY SPLIT BECAUSE HE CAME OUT OF THE CLOSET.

HOW DID I NOT KNOW ANY OF THIS!?

Director Joe Wright wanted Pike absolutely to play Jane Bennet. They did audition a bunch of actors for Bingley, but Woods was still the best and a clear favorite with the casting crew. So Pike decided she could handle it. Her choice.

Oh jeez. All that “a thousand times yes” stuff?

Today it is exactly a year ago that I first saw Lost in Austen. Tomorrow a year ago, I will read the first words of dear Jane Austen.

Sometimes people talk about things— books, movies, anything like that—, that completley  and utterly change your lives, and you think: yeah, sure. But Pride and Prejudice changed my life so so much that I can hardly believe how downright idiotic and ignorant and uninterested in basically everything I was. Austen changed my view on everything, besides setting my hopes up much higher as to guys, the books also got me really interested in history and has resulted in me having too little space for all my books and period drama dvds. Come to think of it, I wouldn’t know you lot if it weren’t for somebody that posted on a weblog about Lost in Austen, and PeriodxDrama on youtube who had uploaded the episodes, I wouldn’t have watched a whole bunch of period dramas, including Downton.

And most of all: I would not have been the person I am now. God this sounds incredibly, incredibly cheesy but really, it is true. I am sure I will still read it once in a while when I am eighty, and I will practically feed it to any possible children and grandchildren.

So that’s me rambling away emotionally. May 18th will be praise Jane Austen day from now instead of my former best friend’s birthday who totally got off track and drinks and cuts and smokes.

Is all I can say to that. I bolded because I can’t do smart thinking right now. But considering I actually wrote my English thesis on Jane Austen’s work and have invested obscene amounts of time in the pursuit of Jane related things, I completely agree with you.

“I have been a selfish being all my life. As a child I was given good principles, but was left to follow them in pride and conceit. And such I might still have been, but for you—dearest, loveliest Elizabeth.”

Elizabeth Bennet: I am not a great reader and take pleasure in many things.

Miss Bingley: Do you play, Miss Bennet?

Elizabeth Bennet: Aye, but very ill indeed.

Mr. Bingley: All young ladies are accomplished! They sing, they draw, they dance, speak French and German, cover screens, and I know not what!

Mr. Darcy: Not half a dozen would satisfy me as accomplished.

Miss Bingley: Certainly! No woman can be esteemed accomplished, who does not also possess a certain something in her air, in the manner of walking, in the tone of her voice, her address and expressions.

Mr. Darcy: And to this she must yet add something more substantial, in the improvement of her mind by extensive reading.

Elizabeth Bennet: I’m no longer surprised at you knowing only six accomplished women. I wonder at your knowing any.

… Elizabeth continued her walk alone, crossing field after field at a quick pace, jumping over stiles and springing over puddles with impatient activity, and finding herself at last within view of the house, with weary ancles, dirty stockings, and a face glowing with the warmth of exercise.
